Introducing the DREAM Studio – A New Era for Emerging Arts and Media at Dartmouth
Art and media are evolving at an unprecedented pace, creating exciting new entrepreneurial opportunities. In response, the Magnuson Center is launching the DREAM Studio—Dartmouth Resources for Emerging Arts and Media, a bold program designed to expand Dartmouth’s arts and entertainment community.
Media Production with Cutting-Edge Technology
With new media constantly reshaping how stories are told and shared, and the entertainment industry continuing to evolve, the DREAM Studio provides students and faculty with the tools, mentorship, and resources to bring their creative visions to life.
The studio empowers students and faculty to explore and produce media using emerging technologies such as AR/VR, podcasting, game development, video production, and interactive storytelling.
By integrating these tools, DREAM Studio fosters an environment where innovation meets artistry, allowing students to push the boundaries of creative expression and entrepreneurship.
A Hub for Innovation at Magnuson
Building on the former Data Experiences and Visualizations (DEV) Studio, the DREAM Studio expands its mission to better support faculty and students in leveraging emerging media and technology.
Previously housed within ITC Research Computing, the DEV Studio was a space where faculty could experiment with advanced digital tools in research and teaching. It supported research projects that extended beyond traditional text-based formats such as 3d scanning, digital twinning, or augmented reality. While students played a key role in bringing faculty projects to life, they also brought their own creative ideas that required dedicated resources and institutional support.
By relocating the studio to Magnuson and rebranding it as DREAM, the studio is making a significant shift toward student-driven innovation while supporting faculty research. This transition is more than a name change—it marks an expanded scope, reinforcing the studio’s strengths in media production and emerging arts.
Bridging Creativity and Profession
One of the most exciting aspects of the DREAM Studio is its emphasis on financially sustainable creative careers. As digital media expands and technologies like generative AI reshape the arts, artists and media professionals face new opportunities and challenges.
How can students turn passion projects into viable careers? How can they sustain creative work in a competitive and rapidly changing industry?
Through collaboration with other departments within Magnuson, the DREAM Studio equips students with the skills, strategies, and networks needed to navigate these challenges. This includes curricular and co-curricular programs that bridge the gap between artistry and entrepreneurship. Students engaging with the DREAM Studio will gain hands-on experience crafting their portfolios and building a strong digital presence, helping them showcase their talents and expertise beyond Dartmouth.
The Future of Emerging Arts and Media at Dartmouth
The DREAM Studio represents a new era for creative exploration at Dartmouth. Whether students and faculty are experimenting with immersive experiences, crafting compelling narratives, or learning how to take their innovative work to a professional level, the DREAM Studio provides the space, tools, and support they need.
For those looking to explore how new technology can enhance their creative or academic work, DREAM Studio is here to help bring ideas to life.
