Saturday, June 6 will see the inaugural LUX festival at Dartmouth! We’re thrilled to be hosting this first annual gathering of student and faculty artists working in computational and projection media. Join us from 4-7PM in the DREAM Studio to celebrate the finale of the term and the opening of the show!

Works on display will include:

“Bloom Wave Project”
June 2025

Bloom Wave is an experiment in digital workflows that incorporate Generative AI that maintains a “Human in the Loop” constraint. Two concurrent spring term classes, CS21, a visual design class led by James Mahoney, and CS89.29, Music and AI, led by Prof. Michael Casey, worked together to create 30 second long audio visual experiences. Both audio and visual students were given this shared template to construct their pieces. Audio was generated first and the graphic designers then chose clips to create their animation with. This was a fun, first of its kind experiment at the dawn of a new age of digital media creation. Participating students include:

“Bayesian Man” – prototype
James Mahoney

June 2025

This is an early exploration for an installation by James Mahoney that eventually will use a heuristic algorithm to animate a small relief sculpture with projected output. This proof of concept integrates motion graphics and generative AI to explore the potential of this medium. Themes of mind, information and perception form the basis of the work.

“Frederick”
Emma Vejcik

June 2025

In reference to the work by Leo Lionni, this work brings whimsy to dark corners. Intended for moments when memories fail and we need to be reminded of the delights of the sun. “Now I send you the rays of the sun. Do you feel their golden flow?”

“Human in the Loop”
John Bell

June 2025

Human in the Loop invites visitors to intervene and prevent the work from entering the downward spiral of a process that creates its own input. A camera watches an algorithmically-generated image projection and discovers the changes humans create by casting shadows across the screen. If the humans around it fail to intervene, the work slowly falls apart as it tries in vain to find new meaning in its own creation.
